Why Kumamoto Castle Is a Must-Visit
Kumamoto Castle is not only one of Japan’s three premier castles but also an enduring symbol of samurai spirit and resilience.
Originally built in the early 1600s by the famous warlord Kato Kiyomasa, the castle has withstood centuries of battles, fires, and even major earthquakes.
Today, it stands proudly as a beautifully restored landmark that offers visitors a glimpse into Japan’s feudal era.

Step inside the reconstructed Honmaru Goten Palace to admire intricate tatami rooms and ornate sliding doors that reflect the lifestyle of samurai lords.

The castle’s unique curved stone walls, called Mushagaeshi, were designed to prevent enemies from climbing them easily. Don’t miss the surviving turrets that still stand from the Edo Period.
